Baby sign language is the use of gestures and signs that allow infants and toddlers to express and mediate emotions/desires, prior to their ability to speak (language development). It is a set of simple hand signs that correspond to common words which are used with a baby every day. You can teach a baby the word, e.g. the word “milk”, by saying the word while at the same time making the sign, and giving baby the milk bottle. Repetition and patience is the key to this process .

Some babies can learn simple signs and gestures by the age of 6 months. Note that your baby may not be able to control its hands to be able to sign back to you until he/she's 8 or 9 months old.

Benefits from employment of this process (baby sign programs) include an increased parent-child bond, better communication and decreased frustration episodes for both parent and child.
